Food Bank of Northern Indiana

With all the talk about how Americans eat too much, it’s hard to believe that millions hardly eat at all. Yet even as they struggle, an estimated 260 million pounds of surplus food per day is being thrown away – more than enough to wipe out hunger in America.

Because of poverty, old age, unemployment, disability, illness or sudden emergencies, countless Americans are hungry at any given moment. And millions more are “food-insecure” – meaning that sometimes they can afford enough to eat, and sometimes they can’t.

Single moms feed their children breakfast, wondering if this would be the only meal of the day. Senior citizens are forced to choose between buying food or buying medicine. But even when they do eat they can often only afford food that is low in nutritional value. The result can be severe malnourishment, even in people who don’t appear to be underweight.

They call America the land of plenty. Yet right here in Northern Indiana there are countless untold stories of people who awakened today worried about finding their next meal. Some might call this a tragedy but there is still hope.
